Resonia (erstwhile Sterlite Power) announced the commissioning of the Gurgaon–Palwal Transmission Project (GPTL), a major infrastructure development aimed at strengthening electricity supply in Haryana, particularly in Gurugram and surrounding areas. The project, valued at approximately ₹1,027 crore, has been developed to improve the availability of reliable power in the region.

The transmission system will enable the evacuation of nearly 2,000 MW of additional electricity to Gurugram and Palwal, helping meet the growing energy demand in these rapidly expanding urban and industrial centres. The project connects with the state transmission network and supports power delivery to millions of consumers across Haryana.

Haryana’s electricity demand has been rising steadily with rapid urbanisation and industrial activity. Peak demand in the state has already crossed 12,000 MW, compared with around 9,000 MW a few years ago, making grid strengthening and additional transmission capacity essential for ensuring reliable supply.

The project is expected to significantly improve the reliability of electricity supply for residents, commercial establishments and industries in the Gurugram region. It is estimated to support power access for over three million households, while strengthening the network serving the city’s business districts and manufacturing hubs.

Another important objective of the project is to reduce dependence on diesel generator sets in Gurugram. The city currently operates more than 10,000 diesel generators, which are commonly used during power disruptions. By enhancing grid capacity and reliability, the transmission project is expected to reduce the need for diesel-based backup power, contributing to lower pollution levels across the National Capital Region.

The Gurgaon–Palwal transmission project includes several key infrastructure components. These include four 400-kV double-circuit transmission lines covering approximately 143 kilometres, along with three gas-insulated substations (GIS) located at Prithla, Kadarpur and Sohna Road.

The project also involves two bay extensions at Dhanonda and a loop-in loop-out connection with the 400-kV Gurgaon–Manesar transmission line, enabling seamless integration with the existing grid network.

Resonia secured the project through the tariff-based competitive bidding process and developed it under the Build-Own-Operate-Maintain (BOOM) model.

A distinctive feature of the project is the deployment of India’s first vertical gas-insulated substations in the transmission sector. These multi-storey substations incorporate a rooftop open switchyard design that significantly reduces the land footprint required for infrastructure development.

While a conventional GIS substation typically requires around 12 acres of land, the vertical design implemented in this project occupies roughly 3.8 acres, resulting in nearly 75 percent reduction in land use.

The project also utilises multi-circuit monopole towers, which optimise space and address right-of-way challenges commonly encountered during transmission development in densely populated areas.

These design innovations are expected to generate environmental benefits as well. The infrastructure is estimated to offset over 18,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually compared with traditional transmission layouts.

With the commissioning of the Gurgaon–Palwal transmission project, Resonia has further expanded its transmission portfolio while supporting the development of a stronger and more reliable electricity network in one of India’s fastest-growing regions.
