Indian industry is eagerly awaiting a booster dose of business-friendly policies to revive the economy and expects action from the Prime Minister much like farmers await the monsoon, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal said. He noted that while there is a slowdown, the broader economy remains stable, and his group continues to pursue large investment plans, including in power transmission projects aimed at strengthening connectivity across regions such as Kashmir.
“It’s a matter of time. The government will take steps to make GST more comfortable, protect domestic industry as global economies are doing, and boost production of natural resources like coal and iron ore,” Agarwal said. He expressed confidence in the Prime Minister’s approach, particularly the view that the government should enable business rather than run it.
According to Agarwal, businesses across the country are waiting for decisive measures to stimulate growth. He compared the anticipation to waiting for rainfall during dry seasons, underscoring confidence that supportive steps will come to help trade and industry.
He said policy intervention can accelerate growth and generate employment, as fundamentals such as fiscal discipline, inflation control, improved ease of doing business, healthier banks and lower interest rates remain intact. However, slower job creation, weak factory output and global headwinds have affected momentum.
Highlighting the transmission sector, Agarwal said India needs significant investment over the next decade to ensure uninterrupted power supply to all households. He pointed to progress under the public-private partnership model, where transparent auctions have reduced tariffs and attracted substantial foreign investment through instruments like InvITs and masala bonds.
Agarwal added that Sterlite Power is prepared to invest between Rs 5,000 crore and Rs 10,000 crore annually in transmission projects. He suggested that monetising transmission assets could unlock large capital for addressing discom debt and strengthening the power ecosystem.
On Kashmir, he said the company has successfully executed challenging transmission projects in the region and remains open to future opportunities. He emphasized timely execution, cost efficiency and strong local support during project implementation.
