For most of Indian history, Rajasthan's Thar Desert represented scarcity. Scarce water. Scarce arable land. An economy that worked hard against geography rather than with it. The districts of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur — vast, sun-drenched, wind-swept — asked more of their residents than most parts of India ever did.

That geography is now Rajasthan's greatest competitive advantage. The same relentless sun and unbroken wind that made these districts difficult to farm make them exceptional for solar and wind energy. Fatehgarh, Bhadla, Ramgarh — once obscure placenames — are now among the most significant coordinates in India's energy future.

The scale of the opportunity

The Fatehgarh Renewable Energy Complex is one of the most productive renewable energy zones in the country. Combined with the Bhadla and Ramgarh zones, the region's total output potential reaches 27,000 MW — enough to power tens of millions of homes. But this power only counts if it can be moved.

The Fatehgarh-3 Pooling Station is the consolidation point for this generation. From there, power must travel east — through Rajasthan's seven districts, across terrain that ranges from sand dunes to rocky plateau — to reach load centres and the national grid.

The Fatehgarh–Beawar Transmission Project is the corridor that makes this journey possible. Two SPVs, F3BTL and BTL, working in concert across 1,472 circuit kilometres to create a 9 GW evacuation capacity that Rajasthan's renewable ambition has been waiting for.

What's being built

F3BTL — The Backbone

Fatehgarh III Beawar Transmission Limited lays the foundational 765 kV D/C transmission line — the second circuit from Fatehgarh-3 to Beawar — along with two 765 kV line bays at Fatehgarh. This is the spine: the high-voltage, high-capacity infrastructure that carries bulk power from the generation complex toward the grid.

BTL — The Integration

Beawar Transmission Limited takes that power and routes it into the national grid with intelligence and flexibility. Its elements include:

–    The primary 765 kV D/C Fatehgarh-3 – Beawar Transmission Line

–    Ajmer – Chittorgarh LILO Transmission Line — weaving into existing corridors

–    Kota – Merta LILO Transmission Line — extending reach and flexibility

–    The 765/400 kV Beawar Substation (AIS) with STATCOM integration — a smart grid node designed for operational stability

Building in the desert

Desert terrain presents its own construction challenges. There are no reliable roads through sand dunes. Working temperatures reach extremes that test equipment and people alike. Tower foundations must account for shifting substrates that vary dramatically over short distances.

The response has been mechanisation, precision, and proven aerial expertise. Infravision drone stringing — drone-guided conductor installation that bypasses the need for ground-level access across difficult terrain — has been deployed at scale. Crane-based erection handles the heavy steel work with speed and safety. The project has been commissioned on March 31st 2026.

What it Unlocks

When the Fatehgarh–Beawar corridor is commissioned, Rajasthan's transition from fossil-fuel dependent state to renewable energy exporter accelerates decisively. An additional 20 GW from Fatehgarh, Bhadla, and Ramgarh zones finds its path to the national grid. 24×7 power availability for Rajasthan improves. The state's role in India's clean energy economy becomes structural rather than aspirational.

For the seven districts through which this line travels, the project means construction employment today and energy security tomorrow. Rajasthan's desert has always demanded something of its people. This project is the first time the desert gives something back at national scale.
