ENICL, the first-of-its-kind Mega Independent Power Transmission Project to be awarded in India, was set up with an aim to evacuate power from the north-east and eastern states to the northern region of India. It has been identified as one of the highest priority lines by the Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO), as it provides critical connectivity for the transfer of power from the generating plants in the north-eastern region. This project addresses the critical issue of power shortfall during non-monsoon months, bringing significant relief to the people of Assam while strengthening grid reliability across eastern and northern India. 

Beyond regional balancing, ENICL plays a strategic national role. By enabling seamless power flow from resource-rich states in the North-East to high-demand northern load centres, it supports industrial growth, agricultural productivity, and urban expansion. The project enhances grid stability, reduces transmission constraints, and improves energy security for states like Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and beyond. It also strengthens India’s larger vision of an integrated national grid capable of meeting rising electricity demand with efficiency and resilience.

The rough terrain in the north-east of India and ROW issues in the region meant that the project’s planning had to be meticulous. Large river crossings added layers of complexity during execution. The region’s vulnerability to earthquakes and flooding required deep technical planning and structural reinforcement to safeguard long-term reliability. 

Robust surveying methods ensured that the challenges due to difficult terrain were effectively managed. ROW-related issues were addressed by multiple teams working simultaneously with various stakeholders to secure timely permissions during the planning phase. The piling for each transmission tower was executed after carefully factoring in seismic sensitivity, soil conditions, and flood risks to ensure structural endurance. Through precision engineering and coordinated execution, the project overcame geographical and climatic challenges to build a dependable transmission backbone for the region. 

project details

The project involved the establishment of two 400 kV Double Circuit transmission lines with a total line length of 452 km, passing through the Indian states of Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar. The company will operate and maintain these assets for a minimum tenure of 25 years. 

These high-capacity lines enable large-scale power evacuation from the North-East, improve interstate power exchange, and enhance supply reliability during peak demand periods. By strengthening inter-regional connectivity, ENICL contributes to balanced load management, supports economic development across multiple states, and reinforces India’s national power transmission framework.
