High-tension power lines running across the skyline evoke progress powering electricity flowing across the landscape. But along the 115 Km Udupi-Kasargode Transmission Line (UKTL), these lines are also powering a new form of cultivation: dragon fruit. Dragon fruit, a vibrant, nutrient-rich fruit introduced to India in the late 1990s, has rapidly gained traction across states like Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra. Its demand is growing, offering a promising avenue for farmers. The fruit, also known as pitaya, is known for its nutritional value, including antioxidants, vitamins, and fibre. It is becoming increasingly popular as a healthy addition to diets worldwide.

The UKTL transmission line, connecting Udupi with Kasargode, finds its way through diverse terrains – fields, forests, villages, and open land. Instead of seeing these corridors as mere pathways for conductors, the team envisioned them as opportunities of Powering Progress in a deeply human way. Through engaged conversations with local farmers and villagers, a unique idea emerged to treat these corridors as opportunities to grow a cash crop. This involved meticulously sourcing, distributing, and cultivating dragon fruit within the right-of-way corridor. This demonstrates how infrastructure can catalyse agricultural innovation and empower communities. For Appaya Gowda in Tenkamijaru Village, Mudbidri Tehsil, in Dakshin Karnataka, his 1-acre plot, near tower location no. 248/0, is now testament to this groundbreaking initiative. Mr. Gowda has successfully planted an impressive 2,000 dragon fruit saplings on 500 poles. His dedication, supported by UKTL’s vision, highlights the tangible impact on individual livelihoods and the wider rural economy.

This project is far more than a simple agricultural venture. It's a powerful demonstration of integrated development, where large-scale infrastructure actively contributes to the prosperity of local communities. By transforming the transmission line's right-of-way from a passive utility corridor into a productive agricultural space, UKTL is optimizing land use and creating a sustainable income source for farmers.
